BARRE, VT - Judith Celia (Rubeski) Prouty, 73, of Gold Spur Lane, passed away on Monday, Feb. 2, 2015, at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin. Her family was at her bedside.
Born Jan. 3, 1942, in Brockton, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of William and Genevieve (Swedas) Rubeski. In 1960, she graduated from Brockton High School, then attended Chandler College and graduated in 1962.
On Aug. 23, 1963, Judy married her high school sweetheart, Sherman Milne Prouty, at her family home in Brockton. Following their marriage, they resided in Burlington, Vermont, while Sherman finished his last two years at the University of Vermont. Following his graduation, they resided in Vermont, New Hampshire and New York until settling in their home in Barre. They had two children, Kimberly and David. Judy spent her life as a mother and homemaker. She was a member of Barre Congregational Church. She was very active in the hospital auxiliary and several times chaired the annual follies fundraiser.
The first and only house Judy and Sherm purchased in 1971 is where they lived out their lives until Judy moved to The Gardens in Williamstown and then the Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center in the last year of her life. Her family and her home on the hill were her true source of happiness. They enjoyed endless fires in their fireplace that they built after hand-picking every stone. Judy had a real knack for decorating and loved gardening. She spent time in the summers on Lake Champlain with her family on their sailboat in Mallets Bay. Her friends were invaluable to her. She enjoyed being a member of her bridge club for many years and was a member of a birthday club for 40 years. In her early years, Judy was also an avid tennis player.
Judy was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when she was 36 years old. She proved herself to be one of the strongest and bravest people known to her family and friends. She felt God only gave those as much as they could handle and faced her illness with dignity. She constantly amazed her loved ones with her courage and perseverance. After her husband passed away, she was cared for by her loving caretakers who treated her as if she was family. Judith will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Judith was predeceased by her husband, Sherman, who passed away Nov. 13, 2011. She leaves behind her daughter, Kimberly Prouty, of San Francisco; her son, David Prouty, and his wife, Eve Ryser, of Napa, California; four granddaughters, Keira, age 11, twins Vivian and Lillian, age 9, and Maya, age 8; her brother, David Rubeski, and his partner, Ann-Marie Polk, of Brockton, Massachusetts; her brother-in-law, Dr. W. Robert Prouty, and his wife, Maura, of Norwell, Massachusetts; and six nieces and nephews and their families.
The funeral service celebrating Judith's life will be held in early summer, to be announced, in the Barre Congregational Church, 35 Church St. in Barre. Interment will take place in the Wilson Cemetery in Websterville next to her husband. There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre, VT 05641 or to the Multiple Sclerosis Society Vermont, 75 Talcott Road, Suite 40, Williston, VT 05495 or to Central Vermont Medical Center, Palliative Care Team, P.O. Box 547, Barre, VT 05641.
The Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre, is in charge of the arrangements.
